Quartu Sant’Elena

From the famous Poetto urban beach, which connects it to Cagliari, to the splendid sandy shores of Mari Pintau (the “Painted Sea”, so called because of its beauty), Murtaucci (the “Sweet Myrtle”, where the strong smells of the sea mix with the fragrance of the island’s most common shrub) and Kala “e Moru (meaning ‘Saracen Landing”, in memory of the Arab pirate raids). Poetto and Mari Pintau boast the European “Blue Flag”, a recognition linked to the quality of the water and tourist services; this title has also been awarded to the port of Marina di Capitana, a safe and well-equipped landing place for pleasure boats. In the Quartese coastal area, along the provincial road leading to Villasimius, there are also places of considerable scenic interest, such as the Geremeas coastline, Punta Is Mortorius and the Cala Regina inlet.

The town is fortunate to be located at the centre of an integrated system of parks, which makes its territory rich in environmental and natural attractions. It stands on the banks of the Molentargius Pond which, together with Poetto and the now disused state salt pans, is a protected wetland where rare species of birds nest. In particular, a colony of pink flamingos has been present since 1993. For those who love birdwatching and dare to venture into the lush reeds of the surrounding marsh, it is not difficult to spot the avocet, the black-winged stilt, the sultan chicken, the grey heron, the little egret, the marsh harrier and other rare migratory species.

The mountainous hinterland of the city is also part of the Parco dei Sette Fratelli, an area rich in forests dotted with springs, waterfalls, cliffs, natural granite sculptures and Mediterranean scrub. It is the ideal place for walks, hikes and treks in search of the extremely rare Sardinian deer, which still lives in these areas. There are also numerous wild boars.
